Alfalfa Breeding Program: Bred to Perform. Proven to Persist.
What Makes Our Alfalfa Different?
Legacy Seeds alfalfa is built for one purpose: long-term success on your acres. We focus on what matters most: persistence, protection, and productivity, to deliver varieties that perform season after season.
Where It All Begins
Our Research & Learning Center (RLC) in Waupaca, WI is the heart of our breeding program. With greenhouses, labs, and 25 acres of field plots, we combine lab-based innovation with hands-in-the-dirt research.
StandLife™ Genetics: Built-In Defense
We screen every variety for resistance to major yield-robbing diseases:
- Aphanomyces (Races 1, 2 & 3)
- Anthracnose
- Phytophthora
- Bacterial wilt
- Verticillium wilt
This is more than a score on a chart, it’s real-world resilience bred for Upper Midwest conditions.
H2: HD® Alfalfa: High Digestibility, High ROI
Our HD® alfalfa lineup is bred for forage quality and flexibility:
- Wider cutting windows
- Better fiber digestibility
- Reliable milk-per-acre potential
- Strong yield + strong nutrition
Ideal for dairy and livestock operations with high harvest intensity.
Bred to Last
We breed for stand longevity, 3 to 5 years and beyond. Traits we select for include:
- Branch and creeping roots for better stress recovery
- Fast regrowth after cutting
- High Relative Forage Quality (RFQ)
- Drought and stress tolerance
It’s alfalfa that doesn’t just survive—it thrives.
Backed by Data
Every line we advance is backed by rigorous field and greenhouse testing. We harvest data like we harvest alfalfa: carefully, thoroughly, and with an eye on results.
