Spring Fever
By Mike Sankey | March 28, 2022
Is it time to plant yet? While some of us are looking out the window at snowy fields, spring will be coming soon enough. Seed deliveries are happening and planters are getting backed into the shop for inspections. Here are a few things to think about before the busy season sets in:
Variety Placement
Seed orders have been taken and are now getting delivered. If you haven’t already, sit down and make a field-by-field planting order and variety placement plan. Though plans may change, doing this exercise could help save valuable time. You know that certain fields dry out sooner than others. Now let’s further define the plan by tying each variety to specific fields. Some varieties are “race-horses” and should be placed on better ground. While other varieties are “work-horses” and should be placed on tougher acres. Not every variety is made to “go anywhere” and in making this plan you are setting yourself up for the greatest chance for success and the greatest ROI. No one wants to clean out the planter because the wrong variety for a certain field is in it. Making this plan could save time and headaches while planting. If you would like help with variety placement please reach out to your dealer or our DSM staff.
Herbicides
Along with a seeding plan, let’s not forget about your herbicide program. Now more than ever, herbicides have an important role in the operation. This year in particular, you might be using products you have never used before due to availability issues. Be sure to READ THE LABEL and remember to watch for planting/rotational restrictions. You don’t want to find out the hard way that your soybean herbicide program has an 18-24 month plant back restriction to alfalfa. Be thinking about the plan for next year and your acreage needs when considering what herbicide program to use.
Technology Agreements
The use of technology and traits are an important part of what we do here at Legacy Seeds. Please take time to visit with your dealer or one of our DSM’s to make sure that you have the appropriate technology agreements signed.
